Israeli defense minister says occupation must end

Dear Editor,

Associated Press Writer AMY TEIBEL wrote a nuanced, truthful “Israeli defense minister says occupation must end” until…. the last section.

The sting is here truly in the tail. The last paragraph contains such flagrant distortions, it’s hard to believe. Why this had to be like this is a complete mystery to me. She wrote:

“Plans for those talks were put on hold indefinitely after Israel announced plans for a new housing project in east Jerusalem. Palestinians claim that sector of the city as the capital of a future state, and have refused to sit down for talks until Israel agrees to freeze all construction there — something it has refused to do.”

“Israel announced plans for a new housing project in east Jerusalem.” – This were not new plans but just the approval of stage 3 of 7 stages of expanding a Jewish neighborhood.

“Plans for those talks were put on hold indefinitely after Israel announced plans for a new housing project in east Jerusalem.” – They were put on hold rather after prime minister Ehud Olmert had to step down, who in secret talks was bending backwards in order to get any agreements with the Palestinian leadership to save his own reputation – without any success.

Mrs. Teibel seems unable to write a report on Israel without blaming the Zionist enterprise for the lack of peace in the Middle-East. I expect AP to cut out such nonsense from her reporting and to advise her to get off her hobbyhorse.

“Palestinians claim that sector of the city as the capital of a future state” This is completely untrue. We have gone over this many times, that the Palestinian leadership does not claim the whole city. In the “final status” negotiations between Olmert and Abbas in 2008 the latter came with a counter-proposal on borders in Jerusalem. That map showed as belonging to Israel in the 2 state solution both Ramat Shlomo and other Jewish neighborhoods built after 1967 beyond the green line.

Lately, I have seen several AP reports in which it said correctly that the Palestinian leadership does not claim big chunks of Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Why did the myth claiming the opposite return to AP reporting?

Shalom from festive Jerusalem,
